Grassroots Enterprise & Maratha Heritage: Fort Trails to Farmer Collectives
Winter Edition — Dec 2025, Karjat

Before dawn broke over the Sahyadri ridgeline, our cohort set out on the historical trails of Karjat. In Maharashtra's geography, hill forts were not merely military fortresses; they were sophisticated watershed management models and hubs of sustainable administration.
Trekking into Living History
Guided by historical mentors, students studied the rock-cut water cisterns and strategic geography of the Maratha Empire, observing how historical governance integrated local ecology, mountain communities, and water conservation.
Visiting Farmer Producer Collectives (FPOs)
In the afternoon, focus shifted to contemporary grassroots economics. Visiting a local Farmer Producer Organisation (FPO), students examined how smallholder farmers aggregate produce to bypass middlemen, purchase organic inputs at wholesale rates, and supply fresh crops directly to nearby cities.
"When smallholders aggregate, they transform from isolated price-takers into organized, confident stewards of their economic future."
The day concluded around a warm community campfire with folk storytelling and candid reflections on agrarian challenges, rural aspirations, and youth leadership.
